The Help

This movie triggered the idea for writing this blog. It was always in my mind. But fate decided when it had to be published. So, now.
Since time before history, women have given up a lot. Sacrificed a lot, just to help people around them. Majority of the women. Except for the occasional Joan of Arc, Ayn Rand, Oprah Winfrey and the likes. TIME magazine has a list of 100 Most Important Women in World History. But just 100? Among billions!
Women have dreams. Men have dreams. Women want to do things. Men want to do things. There is no difference between the last four sentences. The only difference is that some of the women are stuck. Stuck behind societal values. Stuck behind human values that are defined by people in a so-called civilized society(which is based on a biased understanding of the world). Stuck behind their husbands, parents, in-laws. And the list goes on.
Of course there are lots of women who follow their dreams. But I'm talking about women who don't get the opportunity. Women who have social walls around them. The ratio of the number of women who are independent to the number of women who are not is often limited to our peripheral vision. People whom we know. The country and city where we live. But i'm sure statistics will paint a different picture(or pie chart or a graph). To reiterate - i'm talking about women who are not able to... or find it very difficult to fulfill their dreams - or whatever they have in mind.
I have no authority to write what women think. Nobody has. Except for themselves. Everybody sees life through what they have seen. So this is from what I've seen:
I've seen two of my cousin sisters who were forced into marriage. "Good girl, she'll listen to what we say" it seems (yeah, those were the exact words). My sister wiped her tears and walked into the Fort Knox of formalities. I was 14 years old that time and I found it totally unreasonable. I just couldn't... just couldn't... accept it.
Another friend who wants to finish writing her book and publish it. But she has to wake up early, cook, play a dutiful daughter-in-law, abide by numerous religious customs, go to work and come back home in time...and then find time to write her book.
Another friend who has to take care of her baby, 24X7, 7 days a week... who spends sleepless nights taking care of the baby... who finds it very difficult to get her own 'me-time' - to spend time with her friends, to pursue a career, to do various other things.
Another friend who is stuck between parental pressure and peer pressure. Who is out to find a job she likes and is in search of a life she loves.
Another dear friend who wanted to be a badminton player but wasn't allowed by her parents to travel beyond the city for inter-state matches. And that was the smash shot of her dreams. And much later, she wanted to learn swimming only to be scorned by her in-laws and parents.
(from a book titled "Myth=Mithiya") It is ironical that for all the value we give to the rational, life is primarily governed by the irrational. Love, sorrow, ethics, morals, aesthetics, rage, hatred, greed are not rational.
In my pessimistic opinion, it is difficult to start a social revolution and change things over night. It probably needs a big idea, big planning and a big push. And right now, I have no clue how!
I can only think of one rationalized idea governed by an irrational thought - if every individual in this planet loves his/her family and friends... and lends a helping hand, things would be a lot more better, right?
So anyone who is reading this right now can start by helping people around him/her. Help your wife, friend, sister, mother, anyone. Help them in whatever way you can. To realize their dream. To do what they have in mind. No matter how big or small it is.
And that will be of great help.

My daughter's concept of time is different!
It's different from our's.
My daughter turned five this Christmas. Today she almost believed me when I told her tomorrow is New Year. She then judiciously cross checked it with the head of operations, her Mom and realized that it’s two days later. To her, it doesn’t matter if it’s tomorrow or two days later. To her, a New Year is shouting Happy New Year in the middle of the night. She doesn’t even know that the New Year is as long as 365 days. I mean, she knows that it has more than 300 days. Emotionally she doesn’t know that 365 days is a long time. Time is not even relative. It's her own understanding of time.
Even school time (from 8am to 2pm) is just one block of time for her which has a beginning and an end with a lunch interval in between. So if it’s the sixth period and class is about to get over in 15 minutes, she really doesn’t know. To her, lots of periods are over. So chances are this will also get over. But she doesn’t know it is going to get over soon. She splits day and night with light. So if it’s cloudy in the morning, it takes some time for her to believe that it’s morning. (Or I guess she just goes with the flow as we push her to school). She has her classic ‘five more minutes please’. It’s different from our ‘5 more minutes’ that we usually say when we wake up. If she says I want to watch TV for 5 more minutes, it could be one more hour or two more hours depending on the mood she is in. On the whole she is not so much bothered about time. Her time is divided into ‘fun with friends’ time, study time, TV time and outdoor time. Time is not yet so precious to her. While other things are – like her Mother, Father, cousins, friends, toys and her dress(in that order:-))

People, People the decade isnt over yet!

I was reading an article on 'The Hindu' today morning about the best movies of the decade. There has been similar articles/TV programmes floating all around celebrating the decade. It suddenly struck me that decade isn't over yet. Technically. 1 to 10 is a decade and we didnt have 0 AD. It was 1 AD after 1 BC. I myself posted more than a dozen 'best of the decade' links on twitter and facebook. Now I realise we have one more year. People, we have ONE whole year to complete... one more year to have fun, to read, to watch, to sleep, to do all things we like doing... one more year to prove the world what we are capable of. Who knows, you might be featured in the actual 'best of the decade' by the end of 2010. Believe me. You can.

I had a 'Marlin' moment yesterday!

Last night I was looking intently at my 4 year old daughter for at least 10 minutes. It was one of those moments...I was thinking about life – How it is super tough every day… how it is surprisingly evil and beautiful at times… how life is complicated and convoluted.. how life is all sorts of things … how life might be even more tougher for her when she grows up… I know she will evolve with the times and learn to manage things on her own… But I wished one thing… just one thing… for her…. I wished that she gets friends... just like the ones I’ve got now… to lean on… to move on… to keep swimming… to just keep swimming.”

Twenty Five Things about me.
1. Thanks to Francis, I'm writing this and thanks to Waseem I'm writing this about people. Let me start with the boys themselves. Francis and Waseem are two boys who are brilliant in their own ways. They are sure to become famous in the future.
2. I feel I'm the richest person in this planet for I feel I have got everything I want with my family and friends. I do think some of my friends are part of my family, the way family is defined. I dont have any major monetary aspirations as I'm already filthy rich.
3. Even though it's cliched and said in a million award acceptance speeches, I would like to thank my parents who created and crafted me.
4. I'm extremely curious about new things, technology, stories, movies, books and people.
5. When I was young I always felt insecure about my future. I was afraid that I might become a beggar on the street. But I had a back-up plan - of becoming a kindergarten teacher. I thought - C'mon how hard is it going to be to teach ABC... But after having a child, I cant imagine handling two kids a time.
6. Even though information is becoming obsolete with google.com I luvvvvvve information(current and future predictions). And I love to share information with people.
7. To an extent, I know how a man thinks because I'm one. I dont want to spend my time thinking how women think. Instead I would like to spend that time loving them.
8. I feel most of us(including me) are self obsessed most of the time. This is where I like Waseem because he decided to write 25 things about other people.
9. I feel I'm hugely indebted to my parents, teachers, friends, ex-boss and current boss for they have been my steps to move up every single day.
10. I feel life is too short. Too short it might get over any second. After death, it's nothing. It's just blank screen. Pitch darkness. It's more nothing than nothing itself. Death of my near and dear ones(both family and friends) have made me weak and strong at the same time.
11. To continue the previous point - I think most of us dont take life too seriously. By saying 'seriously' I dont mean it literally. I dont think we take care of ourselves enough to take care of others. I dont think we take care of our health so that we can have fun and spend more time with the ones we love.
12. I think drinking and smoking is a self-imposed momentary lapse of common sense. Just because every 9 out of 10 people drink and smoke, it cannot become an ok thing to do.
13. Music, Movies and Books help me to love life more...love people more.
14. To continue point#2&4 I'm curious about people. People whom we bump into by fate and time. As I already said I'm not monetarily inspired. But I would like to earn as many good people as I can. Here too I'm not greedy for more people... just more time with the people whom I like. I'm tempted to mention their names but I have decided not to. People who mean a lot to me know at heart I love them and they love me. To put it in simple words, good people and their goodness is the only currency I can earn.
15 I love fate as much as I hate it.
16 I'm in touch with all my friends for the last 25 years.
17. I love torrents. Thanks to Amritha who introduced me to it.
18. I collect all my letters, cards, doodles and I'm scared that they might get washed away by a Tsunami. Sometimes, I'm paranoid and hassled about stupid things like this.
19. I believe I can get anything if I believe I can. And I will stop trying..i will give up only on the day I die... Because after my death, it doesnt matter whether I got it or not. But I also believe I'll get it before I die. :-)
20. I'm again tempted to mention names - names of people whom I love. I have again decided not to as I dont want to disappoint the people I dont mention.
21. I didnt want to be a single child. I always wanted a sister as a kid. But now Im lucky to get sisterhood love(more than i ever wanted) from people whom I dont want to mention here. (I like personal things to be personal - not on facebook)
22. The previous point reminded me of one more thing. I feel Im lucky. Especially with people whom I've been with through my life.
23. I feel people are more important than work and education. But ironically we need both to take care of the people whom we love.
24. I feel every happy moment is important and has to be stored, rewound, paused and played.
25. I have not said so many things here as I would like to discuss it only offline.
From Francis Thomas' Notes - This is how it works: Once you've been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. At the end, choose 25 people to be tagged. You have to tag the person / people who tagged you. If you’re tagged, it's because the person who tagged you wants to know more about you.

Fwd: a must must-read story…for 2009

If you are one of those who don't like to read, please don't stop reading…for this is a must must-read forward… don't stop… there's something really important … If you stop now, you'll miss something for sure… ok, now quickly to the story – Once upon a time there lived a beetle.. no, not the Volkswagen beetle… the cute crawling insect that looks like the Volkswagen beetle without the wheels. And there was not just one. There were families. In groups. A whole colony was there. And they all liked 'The Beatles', the 60s rock and pop band. Because they lived between the walls of 'the Retro' bar of Hilton Paris hotel that sits in the shadow of Eiffel Tower in Paris. These beetles didn't know when a day started or ended… They didn't have any concept of time. But they clearly knew when a New Year started. Jerry, the hero of our story is a ladybird(or should it be the heroine of our story) that looked just like the logo of Ladybird books; bright red with black spots. The walls had two small openings in the size of a pencil rubber. One lead to the retro bar and the other went all the way to the kitchen. These beetles lived on the cabbage leftovers from the kitchen and had a social life in the retro bar. In fact, Jerry once had a scary worm's eye view of Paris Hilton's legs and got very confused between Hilton Paris, the hotel and Paris Hilton, the model. Jerry and his friends used to come to the bar once in a while and shake a leg together to the 'Help' song by Beatles. The bar manager, the DJ, the guests who came there, the whole human race didn't know these little guys existed way down below their elbows. The life of the beetle was pretty much just like ours. The steamroller of daily existence - hunting for left-over cabbages, daily blows of egos on who's got better spots, eating, sleeping and occasionally dancing at the Retro bar. For some strange reason the Retro bar didn't attract the young and the restless generation during the New year's eve. So they decided to play John Digweed, Moby, Bob Sinclair kind of dinjack dinjack songs on the night before the New Year. So for the beetles, the only time they heard dance music and remixes it was psychologically the end of one long day or one long cycle and a beginning of another new one. On that night, every year, Jerry and his friends had a rocking time head banging and dancing amidst freshly waxed, long, sexy legs. They looked like miniature Volkswagen Beetles jumping like those jumping cars we see in rap videos. And it happened this year too. But this year something strange happened just after the party got over. When Jerry returned to the great wall, he found every beetle(around forty of them) reading a book. They all turned their heads towards Jerry in sync with a wide grin. And they all had the same book with a bright yellow cover. The book was titled 'How to cheat and still don't harm people?'.This is exactly where the story ends. (now imagine me with a gleeful smile). I just made this up. I just wrote this mad, stupid story and made the title of the blog look like an interesting forward. I just wanted your time. And I want your time this year and every new year. And just one more thing. Drum rolls please. Happy New Year! from Sajan who likes to own the real Volkswagen Beetle sometime in the future.

Respect
Just finished seeing "Revolutionary Road' -the movie, based on the classic novel by Richard Yates. It is a realistic account of a couple who thought of themselves as different, intellectual, hipper, more alive when they were single and in love. Then comes marriage and daily existence — his job, her motherhood. Both are individualistic, stubborn yet loving and caring. What continues sounds like a common predicament - daily blows to the ego, which eventually......... you'll have to read the book or see the movie. This movie somehow inspired me to write this - Respect the traffic constable for he stands amid the heavy traffic in the blazing sun
Respect the pedestrian for he/she needs space just like every other vehicle on road
Respect the waiter for he works continuously
Respect the aged for their age
Respect the kids for their craziness and imagination
Respect your friends for their love
Respect your colleagues for their help
Respect thy neighbours if they respect you
Respect the man like an individual
Respect the woman like an individual
Respect the individual for his/her individuality

Quote UnQuote
An easy, lazy way to revive any blog - write one liners. That is precisely what I'm going to do right now. And right now i'm having a hallucinated premonition that these quotes are published in the third page of Reader's Digest:-)...But I should confess these random quotes are truly mine. No pretentious philosophical stuff... just random honest things that i realised during the course of my life... till now. Five years from now I might even laugh at them... saying how immature they are... But right now i think they are true.
There will be NO WAR between nations...between neighbouring countries...if you can leave your car right in front of your house WITH the keys in it.

Classroom Orgasm!!!

Another old article of mine. Thanks to my friend 'Ryan' , it got published in a magazine called 'The Man'
An Orgasm as described by the Oxford is the climax of sexual excitement, characterized by intensely pleasurable sensations centred in the genitals. History would say it’s the raison d'ĂȘtre of a sex obsessed crazy male species. Whatever the case may be, men strive to reach the K2 level of sexual peaks in their bedroom and fantasize about it when they are not in the bedroom...as many times as they can before they die. Almost not a second is wasted. Orgasm is essentially a powerful energy expulsion where all the energy is steered towards just one thing - coitus!
Now imagine... just imagine...
What if the orgasm happened between the ears? Literally. What if we got orgasms by reading. Not by reading erotica. Just by reading. Every page and every chapter will be a stage towards the climax. The better the book, the more interesting it is, the more informed and cognizant it is, the longer and better will be your orgasm. Knowledge and intelligence would become sinfully exciting. Intellectual masturbation would actually make sense. Men would start faking it more than women. Or boys will outperform girls in higher secondary examinations. Classrooms in schools and colleges would be moaning in chorus with 'mmmmhs' and 'aaaaaaaahs'. And Viagra would be prescribed for men with erectile dysfunction. Book reviews will be rated on the longevity and calibre of each orgasm. You'll get reviews like 'sure-shot multiple orgasms' instead of the usual 'international bestseller'. Book critics would be having a gala time. Pulitzer prize winners and quizmasters would be the horniest buggers. Neuroscientists will be having a ball. News readers will have the most difficult time maintaining their composure. And you would’ve been on your way to an orgasm even as you read this.
Sounds crazy doesn't it? But imagine a potent energy like orgasm directed towards something useful. We would have had a developed world of the year 2098 by today. Flying cars, space travel, average life expectancy of 120+...and the like. The entire civilization would be full of whiz kids and prodigies. The elderly would be even more intelligent and wiser than anyone can imagine. There would be considerably lesser number of rapes and molestations. Women would finally be free from debauchers. Men would be busy burglarizing book stores.
But why didn't the God almighty think of this. He definitely could have if I could have. Then why did he make men oscillate towards the tempting forbidden zone called ‘sex’ with a bait called orgasm. May be he was afraid that the human race would become more intelligent than he was and may be even realize immortality.
Since everything is relative…so in relation to life - may be life wouldn't have been as interesting as it is now if the case was otherwise. Orgasm is a wonderful thing. And so is life. Life is too wonderful an adventure with loads of other gifted feelings and relationships. Too wonderful to be changed from what it is now.
To put it in simple words, ‘Life is the longest orgasm anyone can have.'

Mother's Day
An old article that I wrote in another blog. Just posting it here again.
‘Mother’s Day’ – ever noticed the unintentional pun? It is Mother’s day every day. The day belongs to her. The mere existence of the human race and the passage of time belong to her. But it’s a poignant irony that we’ve reduced it to a mere anniversary celebration. We are pretty much aware of the fact that it is a marketer’s invention. But still things go on. Special programmes on TV. Greeting cards. Ads. And lots more to remind us of somebody we know as the “mother”. Today's generation think that it’s another day to celebrate. It’s not their fault for their life began much after the media explosion. But no amount of media clout can monitor the level of the mother’s love inside everybody’s home. The so-called reality shows can just come inside our home bur not inside our heart.
Motherhood love. It’s universal. It’s chemical. It’s biological. It’s transcendental. It’s magic. It's everything, sssooo obviously. This motherhood love is also contagious that it is in every one of us. Sometimes the father mothers the child. Sometimes the brother takes care of the sister. She has genetically transferred the GOOD DNA. And this good dna is also helping mother earth stay alive.
Ok, lets play devil’s advocate - the hungry marketers might have actually done something good without their knowledge. With so much grief and combat around the planet, may be we need a break and actually commit to our memory that there’s somebody called the 'mother'. Today’s world needs such a reminder service. To take timeout form our demented work schedules. To actually come out of our perfunctory life and spend some time with our family.
So Happy Mother’s Day. 365 days a year.
Memories. Not Forever.

Photographs. Home videos. What splendid inventions. Man found a way to capture time and space in 2D and 3D what God initially thought could be stored only in their minds. From the good old pinhole camera days, ten centuries ago to the present digital age, we have been fortunate enough to store our memories and see them whenever we want to.
The only problem now is organising our photos. There are photos and videos in our digital camera, mobile and the camcorder. Too many photos in too many folders. Too many wires to charge the devices and too many USB cables to connect it to our computers. Assuming that we have managed to organise everything... lets say, we store them properly as prints and CDs/DVDs. In hard bound albums and leather cd pouches. Now the million dollar question - how long can we have them? As long as we live. So what happens after that? Our next generation will hopefully preserve it and see it whenever they want to(and hopefully remember us). How long can this go? Do you think our great great great great grand children will treasure it too? How many photos of our great great great grand parents do we have? How much time do we spend talking about them?
Once my cousin and myself took the effort of collecting old photos of our grandparents, scanning them and hosting a website. Imagine. We are a family of 40 in my mother's side. Only two had the interest. Imagine if I die tomorrow, I'll have no idea what will happen to the photos after that. Or lets say, I die a natural death at 80 something( Murphy has to prove it wrong, so I'll live longer:-)) what will happen to the photos after that? I'll never know. Or imagine there was a tsunami and the flood swept away all my photos and videos. (that is little over the top or me being my paranoid self). Ok, what Iam trying to say is that technically memories cant last forever. They last only as long as we live. But photographs and videos are a wonderful thing. I want to collect it as much as I can and relish it on a rainy day or whenever I can. No matter when I die, I'll be happy that I have captured these moments that mean so much to me. By that way, somehow i get this feeling that Iam living life to the fullest.

MENopoly
I hate monopoly. I hate the word. Except for the board-game with the same name, I hate everything about it. The Monopolistic and Restrictive Trade Practices Act in India represents abuse of market power in the production and marketing of goods and services by eliminating potential competitors from the market. It's about taking unfair advantage and control over the market by superior guerrilla marketing tactics or by charging unreasonably high or low prices and preventing competition in the same field.
For example take the ipod. 'Creative' was one of the first companies to produce MP3 players but has lost out to Apple which dominates the market. I hate it. I agree it's got a brilliant design. It's a good product. All other mp3 players are technically good or even better than the ipod. Ipod doesn't even have a FM radio. But somehow it has managed to magnetize the world. Apple fanatics might disagree. This outcry from one in a billion blogs cant change a thing. Which is precisely my point. Monopolist corporates and individuals are extant parasites. Nothing can be done. The customer might be the 'King' but corporates still rule the planet. They even decide how our environment should be.
The probability of you reading this on a PC which runs on a windows operated system is 8 out of 10. Microsoft is another giant that secretly allowed counterfeiting of its own software, so that everyone uses it. We don't know any other operating system or any other way our computers could work. Here, I would like to thank Apple for their rebellious marketing effort. The list goes on. Coke. Pepsi. P&G. Unilever. USA(at least for the time being). etc. Mammoth wolfs in sheep's clothes.
But I'm not here to talk about them. I'm here to talk about someone else of a similar nature. He's the most perceptible Monopolistic Monster of them all. Yea, it's a 'he'. The Man. The male species. The person who belongs to the sex that cannot have babies. From time immemorial, 'he' has ruled the world. Men framed the law. History was written by winners, mostly men. Theories, philosophies, stories were mostly written by men.
So if they wrote Adam came first and then came eve, then Adam came first - for that's how it was written. It was always the evolution of Man because a man wrote it. Knowledge is knowledge as we know it. In other words we know it the way it was written by men.
So you might think whether I'm still caught in a time wrap. I agree that women have excelled in every field. It's good thing that the line is also becoming a cliche. Women have been accepted as equal partners and men have let them do whatever they want... to an extent. Unfortunately, we, the so called new gen people think of all these in a closed air-conditioned room. We only see what we want to see, living in metros or big cities. The rest of India or the rest of the world(sans the metros) is where the major population lives.
Did you know that 75% of the people who live in Bombay live below the poverty level. Try looking there and you will see the real world. We are still fighting for 33% reservation for women in our parliament. Sexual Harassment, abuse, rape, abortion, infanticide, foeticide, son preference still exist. If things have evolved, we wont be needing 'Women's day' in the first place. It's still a man's day 364 days a year.
Men have to travel a lot... in their mind. Perceptions have to change at an individual level. Not just men from villages and small towns. There are such guys everywhere. Women should also not let men take advantage. It's easy for me to write these things. They should do this. They should do that. People should think like this. I know I cant do a thing unless I have a wireless remote control to all their minds. I'm just airing my views here. To me, it's not just Men Vs Women. It's A vs B. Or X Vs Z. One cannot overpower the other. I hate monopoly. I hate monopoly. But unfortunately, my world-views end with me.
